Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) Isoenzymes (APISO)

Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) Isoenzymes (APISO)

Reported as a comment:

ALP1

Predominantly liver isoenzyme present.

ALP2

Predominantly bone isoenzyme present.

ALP3

Both liver and bone isoenzymes are present in approximately equal concentrations.

ALP4

Biliary isoenzyme also present.

ALP5

Intestinal isoenzyme also present: this may indicate intestinal disease but also may occur in the absence of pathology in some individuals of blood group O and B after eating.

ALP

Alkaline phosphatase isoenzyme analysis is not indicated when the total alkaline phosphatase is not markedly raised.

Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP)

Alpha Subunits (ASU)

Alpha Subunits (ASU)

  • Adult males and pre-menopausal females: <1.0 IU/L
  • Post-menopausal or mid-cycle females: <3.0 IU/L

Pregnancy - there is a 0.1% cross reaction with hCG resulting in very high ASU results in pregnancy.

Results should be interpreted along with the serum LH, FSH and TSH results and renal function tests.

Aluminium

Aluminium

<0.37 umol/L: Normal (no history of CRF).

<2.22 umol/L: Desirable in CRF patients.

>2.22 umol/L: Excessive accumulation.

>3.70 umol/L: Cause for concern, high risk of toxicity in children.

>7.41 umol/L: Urgent action required; High Risk of toxicity in all.

Amfetamine (Amphetamine)

Amfetamine (Amphetamine)

Toxic range: > 0.2 mg/L. Amfetamine concentrations above 0.50 mg/L have been linked to fatalities, but in regular amfetamine users, blood concentrations may range up to 3 mg/L without toxic effects.  (Schulz et al. Critical Care 2012, 16:R136).

Amikacin Antibiotic Assay

Amikacin Antibiotic Assay

For once daily dosing aim for pre-dose levels (taken 15 minutes before dose) of <5mg/L and post dose levels (taken 1 hour post dose) of >35mg/L.

For multiple daily dosing aim for pre-dose levels of <10mg/L and post dose levels of 20-30mg/L.

In therapeutic use, plasma concentrations for the two drugs combined do not usually exceed 300 ug/L, with symptoms associated with toxicity observed at levels greater than 500 ug/L. (Clarke's Analysis of Drugs & Poisons, Third Edition)
