Sulphonylurea Screen (Sulfonylurea Screen)

Sulphonylurea Screen (Sulfonylurea Screen)

This is a screening test for the presence of sulphonylureas in plasma or urine. As such, we will report results as Positive or Negative for the drugs listed above. All can be detected reliably at concentrations of 0.5 mg/L in urine and plasma.

Sweat Chloride

Sweat Chloride

Interpretation is based solely on sweat chloride concentration.

Age

Sweat Chloride concentration (mmol/L)

Interpretation

<6 months

<30

Cystic fibrosis is unlikely but requires genetic and clinical correlation

6 months and over

<40

Cystic fibrosis is unlikely but requires genetic and clinical correlation

<6 months

30-60

Intermediate result which requires further cystic fibrosis assessment

6 months and over

40-60

Intermediate result which requires further cystic fibrosis assessment

All ages

>60

Supports a diagnosis of cystic fibrosis

Sweat Sodium

Sweat Sodium

Sweat sodium is used as a check of the chloride result. Interpretation is as follows:

Cystic fibrosis unlikely                                  < 50    mmol/L

Supports the diagnosis of CF                         > 90    mmol/L

The Sodium and Chloride concentrations should be within 20 mmol/L of each other.
